An interview with Synechron

Its been about 3 weeks I had been in a “job search” mode here in Pune, India. I got a call from Synechron asking me about scheduling an interview with me for a .NET position. Well, the company looked good to me, honestly the only thing we have to hang on to is the website. A quick search in the cloud did return some results about the reviews for this company. They were not show stoppers really. So I decided, heck why not, lets do this! Basically it is going to be the same thing all over, some US based clients, an offshore development center in India, and rest of the story goes on and on…(I know I sound really bored of this profession :))).

So how was the interview, 2 technical rounds, 2 HR rounds and then the offer! (No free lunch, dammit).

1st interview

The manager certainly was heavily technical and knew what he was talking. I really felt good about that, since I have been interviewed by retards before. The questions pretty much summed up like these –:

- C# programming language features

- .NET underlying working.

- Garbage collection working

- Dispose method usage

- Lots of OOPS questions like abstract classes, interfaces, inheritance, composition etc.

- SQL queries, WITH NO LOCK usage, nested transactions.

Done.

2nd interview

This guy asked my about things that were discussed with the earlier guy so that things do not get mixed. Questions were pretty tricky in some cases so it was fun,

- use of usercontrols, CauseValidation usage in ASP.NET

- DataRelation object in ADO.NET

- Optimize an SQL query for better performance

- Dispose vs Finalize method

- Polymorphism and some other basic OOPS concepts.

- Casting vs Unboxing.

Done.

Then were 2 HR rounds which, for some, are mere formalities in India. I take these interviews very seriously, probably due to my stint in US. I think HR interviews are meant for a smartness check and overall personality of an individual, good companies certainly reject candidates if these interviews do not go as per their standards. Well.. I do think in India most of the HR interviews are just a formality :(. I do not know if you guys would be interested in knowing what we discussed in these interviews, but let me know if you need some hints on these as well.

Anyways, I got an offer from them,uummmm... a decent one, so lets see where things go from here. Best of luck to all you job hunters!

Happy Programming!

  1. Wow congrats man. I am thinking of applying to Synecron too.great feedback abt the interview. I would be interested to know about the HR interview too.wht salary did u get?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Wowwww, thats a quick comment on a something i posted few hours ago ;). Well, first of, know what exactly what you want to do in a Software Company, as these guys are not much into product development, it is more of Consulting.
The first HR round was a personality check. Questions were like why Synechron, are you willing to handle a Lead role, willing to travel, why would I not join Synechron etc. The key is to be confident, I know that is a common sense advise, but really Consulting does require that a lot!
Salary :), I personally do not like to talk much about that, but I can assure you they can pay you more than the average salary you might expect for your experience in other equivalent firms in India. These guys are growing at a real fast rate.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Well and the 2nd round was with a senior HR person. This was more or less on the same lines, but mostly about the travel requirements to US where most of their clients are. I guess this interview decides if a candidate is worth directly in front of the client as early as possible.

  10. hey !! I have got an offer from synechron , wud like to know about job security @ synechron .with 2k pple on board and been in IT for 10 years now, dnt u feel the numbers of employees are way less. Is it due to attrition or wat?

    ReplyDelete
  11. First off, I am not among those guys who have job security at the topmost of my checklist while finding a job. For such things, I think you know which companies to target :). But overall they are at a stage of rapid growth. So lots of hiring happening these days. There is some attrition rate but probably the reason we are stil at that number could be, in the years in between, much hiring was not done due to market situations.
Not sure though. For freshers, I do not think its a "secure" environment, but for experienced onces, probably its good enough.

  12. @kalyan - I suggest apply for a Production Support position or something, Synechron do need support guys.

  13. Hi Abhang! Great to learn about your experience. How's life going at Synechron. I heard timings are from 12 to 9 and people usually end of working late in the night,is thie true? Also please let me know about the work culture and do they have mostly support based projects or dev projects as well. I know its difficult to tell but just wanted a candid feedback about the company in general. It will be really helpful before I join. Thanks in advance. I would be joining as a lead-.Net Tech.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi there,
As far as the work time is concerned, it's either 8-5 or 12-9. Working late is not new to an outsourced business, is it :). It really depends on what kind of project dates are promised, I am fairly happy with the timings till now. I have been working on dev project since I have joined here. It would be unfair to say a company is bad since some of projects are not managed well
, as far as I am concerned it's a good company.

  15. Hi Abhang. i'm supposed to join synechron in few weeks as associate specialist. Would it be possible for u to provide some guidance on the responsibilities attached to this profile? Ideally, how much time project allocation takes on such role? Is work life imbalance a big issue there? do u need to work late night from office? wat about work from home?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lol, "work late at night" this is something I hear from so many worrying about it. Its been more than a year for me, I have not been working late night ever. I have been onsite since I joined so it could be a different story for me. Working from home is something girls are asked to do mostly. Project allocation time really depends on the scene, I was on a project the next day I joined. It really cannot be the same story for every person, just my 2 cents.

  17. Hi Abhang,

Well your posts are quite inspiring ;)

Well I am a 9yrs exp QA-testing lead currently working in Mumbai.

Coming to the point, I ve got an interview call from them. I read a few places on net about they being paymasters. Is that true? Also do they consider onsite for testing people or its just you'all developers? :) Any idea?

Also let me know if you got any idea about testing interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nilesh,
Congrats on the interview call. Synechron welcomes experienced folks these days which I guess is in your favor. Yes they attract people with money. For overall benefits like insurance, leaves etc, may be they might not be famous for. Ive heard testers and devs equally having oppurtunity for onsite. Really depends on the kind of project you land in.
    Best of luck anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Abhang,

The interview went fairly well. Not much time consuming. Done with 2 rounds. (Not sure if 2nd round was technical though). They just asked high-level questions. When I came out of interview room, the HR lady said they will get back to me without even taking feedback from the interviewer.

Not sure how they take this ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dude I ve got the offer from them. Its for Pune, however, I am more interested in onsite. Do I ask them upfront before joining or what you suggest?

I ask this to you mainly because you ve been to onsite since you joined. Did u ask them upfront or just they gave onsite to u without any hassle?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Nilesh: Ahh, so you are among those dancing to go onsite! Well you sure have landed in the right company then. You are free to look for reviews for this company all over the cloud, you might find stories of joy, distress, etc. But one thing you will find in common is all most probably have had good onsite oppurtunities. If you are good, and your superior thinks you can handle a client professionaly, you are off to some onsite location. Thats all I say, welcome to Synechron.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi , Even there is an onsite , just wanna know hows the pay benefits provided in ONSITE . Is it really good enough or its just onsite without a fair expense.
More, is there any dress code in the company?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey first of all let me thank you for your blog, it has been helpful for many people and still the count is on..
    thanks..

i am expecting an offer as a BA (business Analyst) from them.. do u have any say for it. i guess it is for US insurance. any advice on this would be quite helpful..

    ReplyDelete
  24. Abhang Do you mind putting forth the designation/role hierarchy in Synechron? I have been offered a role of a QC Lead, however, I am not sure where am I fitted in. Hence this query.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have been asked about onsite experience on several experiences, the thing I want to reiterate is it seems to vary person to person. Mine was quite good. Hence I would say the onsite offers are equally good as offshore ones.
About dress code, yes Synechron does have a formal attire on weekdays except Fridays. Fridays its Jeans etc. Not too gawdy though. Being a service based firm it needs to adhere to some rules which honestly I dislike sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Ramakant: Being a Sr. Dev here I have not been around too many testers especially in my project. But the project which you are alluding to I guess is a big one with big team. BA role should be quite exciting I would say but take my words with a pinch of salt, you better be finding some blogs by QA folks here, (If there are any).

    ReplyDelete
  27. To be honest I have not been able to figure out the complete hierarchy accurately yet. But I would say QC lead would report directly to Project Manager who reports to Account Manager. Above that is a mystery I am yet to solve.

  28. Hi Abhang-
I am already a part of big organisation(infy) , so have certain questions prior joining -
    1. As I am already a part of a biggie , how will be the ambience or response I can expect from Synechron.
    2. I've been told about onsite as well but is it really a fact.
    3. Heard a lot about (!worth) workplace due to some managerial bla bla. I know everywhere its like that but how much here.
    4. Is offer really d only reason to be its part or there are few more.
    5. How is the work culture and management.
    6. Mentioned about work pressure. Is it really so much!

If you wanna post me in mail , u can reach in bunthatest@gmail.com

  31. Thanks so much .... This blog is really helpful.
I have already gone through an interview process last saturday. I am in to Testing and they took a technical interview (approx 30 min). The interview went fine. After that in my HR interview, the HR just ask me some simple que like long term onsite willingness, why synechron etc.... then he immediately told me that he will send me an offer.. I am awaiting a call frm HR.. I just want to know that do they discuss the salary on phone... How long the entire process takes??? I mean till offer ...

How much hike can i expect in percentage from synechron.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey, um... Anomymous,
Your question really does not have one answer. If you are good, if you deserve it, then you can surely get a good percentage hike. I mean really good, Synechron is among better paymasters. Finally it depends on your negotiation skills, this is something I suck at.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I got the offer... Its decent, got what i asked. Now want to know few more things:-

    1. The CTC is fixed pay. WIll i get the CTC/12 minus the PF and professional tax as my monthly salary.
    2. What about Performance bonus and Incentive pay out. How does they pay the bonus. Is it good enough.
    3. Do they have transport facility in Pune Hinjewadi office. WHat kind of transport is this??
    4. I have replied to the mail with acceptance but didnt get any reply. Do i need to send them signed copy of Offer letter.

  35. Hi,

I read very bad reviews about this company on mouthshut and glassdoor. How do u rate Synechron as far as Job and company politics and onsite treatment is considered.

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Sagar : Before being interviewed for Microsoft, I had read bad reviews about them too :). "Bad" is just relative. It need not be said that, in a service based firm like this, good or bad is defined primarily by the project you are on. For me it was good. And I can be frank in saying, not all projects are good here.
If you are looking for a place where you get ninja coding skills, polyglot programmers, this might not be the place. Try Thoughtworks for that!

  45. Hii Abhang. I am having technical interview at synechron on 26th sep. i m so tensed of what all questions they will ask. is it necessary that i should answer all the questions? please guide me.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi,
Synechron is aggresively hiring in the wake of the current situations. I would say if you have shown decent technical expertise, you should have a good chance. For dreamers, I would say make sure the basic OOPS fundamentals are crystal clear. Good knowledge of C# or Java could be very helpful. Basic SQL knowledge needs to be there.
About onsite, nothing can be sure until the client decides. A client has to interview you in order to find a right fit. It is not wise to assume one would get an onsite position because some firm assured you.

  51. HI Guys,

I went through their interview yesterday...cleared the first round - was purely technical but the interviewer made me comfortable and it was a good interview over all...

The second interview..again technical, but more project specific. The interviewer seems convinced but the HR told me they will get back to me on Tuesday...
Just wanna know is this the normal interview procedure at synechron? Has any one got the offer letter the same day they were interviewed?
Also was any one rejected in the second interview...if yes how it was conveyed?

    Thanks!
    Awaiting a response

  67. Hi Abhang, Thanks for the blog. I see you have not replied from long time. Are you still with Sync?
I have got 3 offers (Java/J2EE) out of which 1 is from Synechron. The employer paying best is paying me 5 Lacs/Annum extra than Sync.
I want to relocate to Pune, hence I am thinking of Sync. I am puzzled about accepting the same but think the major factor I am looking out is for Onsite where I can recover some money. Are there enough of onsite opportunities these days in Sync?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, just sidetracked by few things as usual. Its been a while I left Synechron. 3 offers, good for you mate. If you are looking for onsite stuff, Synechron is the place to be. Lots of opportunities (atleast when I was there). Well but if you relocate to Pune and go onsite, you are anyways relocating "onsite" really :).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thanks for your reply Abhang. You got it. I meant I wanted to keep my base location as Pune. ;)
I was curious for onsite so as to fill in the gap of 5 lacs in salary structure. Anyways, got my answer.

By the way, whats the standard of pay in Pune? (Of course I mean on an average, as it also depends on being some good Product based companies where I believe it will be little higher than Service based companies)

In Bangalore, the pay masters pay n*2 + (2|3|...n)) , where n is number of years of experience. e.g. if I have 6 years of exp. then the paymasters (many in bangalore) pay around 12 < Package < 18.

What about Synechron? Do they pay atleast double the experience? Do they really honor internal parity structure of salaries? (I believe you might not be interested to answer this as you are no more with Synechron)....

but thanks again for the forum!!!

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sorry.. forgot to mention, Synechron offered me (n*2) - 2.
By the way, are you in Pune? (If you don't mind may I ask) which company?

  71. Hi Abhange,

I got an offer from synechron, pune for Asurion client as told by HR, not sure how much true. But i am confused of joining or not because i heard that synechron fires employees like that and also read from some website about same.

i have 5 yrs of experience in DWBI, what will you recommend. Please reply i need your valuable reply and it may save my career..

    ReplyDelete
  72. Congrats on the offer. Asurion is old and good client of Synechron. The team is big, and big teams have its own pros and cons. About Firing, not much to my knowledge. People tend to leave soon, hence Synechron has to hire a lot again. Thats just my view although I am not with them anymore.
Depends on what other options you have in hand.

  73. Hi,

    Nice Blog......

I have schedule interview at coming Saturday 6-Oct-12 at pune.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi,
    To the anonymous person above
    @anonymouns September 16, 2012 8:38 AM
If you are Java/J2EE resource, you will spoil your career with Synechron, they do not have good projects or Java work.
You are losing 5L a year, and as well as losing your skills in that year.
I will insist, if you can find an alternative please do that.
I wasted (or rather spent) 2 years in this company in hope of one good project to work on, they do not have good Java work, I don't know much about other skills, but Java guys stay away.

And too much politics and bad managers in this company.

    Thanks!

  80. Hi,
I went through the .Net interview process today (17th March 2013). The interview went fair enough but had few goof ups in between. It was purely technical and questions on WCF and LINQ to the most. The interview went for close to 45-50min but I was told that HR will get back. I am really worried and expecting a call from them. Did anyone got offer on the same day?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hello Guys, Went through the blog and phew!!! so many concerns before joining the org... Well i joined Synechron recently and i would say, go with your gut feelings.. i have worked with all biggies and CMM certified companies.. My experience with the company so far has been great.. the ambience is good, work location is good, systems (your bread and butter) performs at the optimal level.. Initially after being hired, you would be joining the Center of Excellence team where you would be part of a unique team that would do the POCs for other projects, provide your feedbacks to other projects progress and designs.. and most importantly COE gives you the opportunity to overcome your shortcomings on the technology front. in-between we get interview calls from the client... which if your clear, you would be on accounts else keep upgrading yourself while in COE. The place is good with amazing work culture and positive and inspiring thoughts throughout the campus.. there are many negative comments on the company by many people who have got frustrated with the work at synechron.. however i would like to ask them.. is it something different then where you presently are? i guess it is the same among all the services based company and we need to accept this fact before taking the offer.. later we at no point should regret our decisions.. so guys go with your gut feels... All the best and welcome onboard to all new aspiring candidates...

  82. Was interviewed in 1st week of April, all goes well but HR is taking to much time to release his final decisions, they are neither saying No/Yes .

"Saying update you as earliest.. we are in process . :) "

  95. Hi Ajith, Not many onsite opppurtunities for Wellsfargo as they gave their offshore delivery center here itself. I also got a call from Synechron asking to join WF. Did you join the company ? and let us know how it is ?

  96. This company is trap . They will add this clause in your offer letter, which you will receive after you join the company that "we can remove you for no reason"

You see, in the reviews only HRs and Managers gave good ratings, because they are forced to do that to attract people. Or some crazy maniacs who want to test their evil practices like this company.

These people don't know anything about software , coding and development. They only business, blackmailing and cheating

If you are not able to perform well in client interview or at client location, they will kick you out of company. No matter how many years of experience you have in your career you will be treated like a donkey at client location.

Hyderabad and Bangalore, you have bright future, don't give your future in their hands under the name of hike.

Very worst people, they don't even give you hike once you join company.

My advice for this company is to stay away from hyderabad and bangalore don't spoil the atmosphere here with your corrupt politics. Please .
